Earthquake Insurance

A week from Thursday, which is 10-18 on the calendar and on that day at 10:18 in the morning, we’re being encouraged to participate in the Great American Shake-Out to practice drop, cover and hold-on.

While thinking about earthquakes, the California Earthquake Authority would like all homeowners to consider having earthquake insurance to cover damages caused by quakes.

Authority Chief Communications Officer Chris Nance says earthquake insurance is a separate policy purchased through the homeowner’s insurance provider. And 80 percent of insurance companies choose to offer policies from the Authority.

He says on average, ten to 12 percent of California homeowners have earthquake insurance.
