San Juan Capistrano enters into exclusive negotiation for water services

The San Juan Capistrano City Council has agreed to negotiate with the Santa Margarita Water District for water and sewer services.

Councilman John Taylor says the Moulton Niguel and the South Coast Water Districts were vying for the opportunity to take over the services from the city.

He says the Council liked Santa Margarita’s diverse water sources including its plans to put in rubber dams in the creek that would store rain water and its use of recyclable water.

Taylor says the city and the water district will devote several months to go over the details of a possible contract. And the Local Agency Formation Commission will have to approve the arrangement before the water district becomes the city’s water source.

He believes the process could take up to a year.
