Some charges tossed in case that ensnared ex-baseball star

A federal judge has dismissed the criminal case against a man convicted of profiting off of insider information provided by ex-baseball star Doug DeCinces.

The Orange County Register reports the judge had tossed the case against David Parker. The judge previously noted that prosecutors' case against Parker during the first trial appeared to be contradicted by the testimony of DeCinces, the government's own witness, during the second trial.

DeCinces, a former third baseman for the California Angels and Baltimore Orioles, was convicted of insider trading for a stock buy that earned him more than $1 million. He agreed to testify against another defendant, James Mazzo, in exchange for a shorter sentence.

DeCinces' sentencing hasn’t yet been scheduled.

Mazzo agreed to a $1 million settlement with the government.
