American Red Cross survey on home fires

A new national American Red Cross survey shows roughly two in five people think it’s more likely they’ll win the lottery than lose their home in a fire.

But the real chance is greater of dying from exposure to fire or smoke, compared to winning the lottery which is typically one in millions.

American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region CEO Linda Voss says home fires can happen to anyone and sadly, these crises can be caused by everyday activities like cooking a meal at home.

The survey showed nearly all people surveyed said they they’ve engaged in ordinary activities that are among the leading causes of home fires such as leaving the kitchen while cooking on the stove, walking away from their grill while cooking and falling asleep or leaving a room while burning candles.

The Red Cross urges everyone to always supervise cooking equipment and candles.
