Man arrested after fatal shooting in front of police office

The Los Angeles Times reports authorities say a man was arrested after shooting and killing the mother of his child during a custody exchange in front of Hawthorne police headquarters. Police Lt. Ti Goetz told the Times the shooting took place about six in the evening outside the station. The woman, whose name hasn’t been released, died at the scene.

Goetz says an officer who heard shots from inside the station rushed outside, spotted the suspect and opened fire.

Goetz said the suspect, whom police didn’t identify, was arrested in Hawthorne about 9 in the evening.

Police told the Times that the couple's 17-month-old daughter was present at the shooting but wasn’t hurt.
