Stroke Awareness

A stroke is a “brain attack.”  University of California, Irvine Stroke Neurologist Dr. Mohammad Shafie says it’s when the blood flow suddenly stops in one part of the brain because of a blood clot. And that’s commonly known as an ischemic stroke. This occurs 80 percent of the time. The other 20 percent of strokes are caused by cerebral hemorrhage, when a blood vessel bursts or leaks and enters a part of the brain where it normally wouldn’t be.

Dr. Shafie says symptoms of a stroke include slurred speech and dizziness.

He, along with stroke survivor Jim Bastian and stroke lifesaving device creator Dave Ferrera, are the guests on our public affairs show “Collage,” which airs this evening at seven. “Collage” can be heard anytime on-line: www.jazz885.org
