Irvine City Council may fill a vacancy

The Irvine City Council may appoint a member of the public to serve in the Council seat vacated by Christina Shea when she succeeded to the Office of Mayor.

Senior Media Services Coordinator Melissa Haley says the Council will hold a special meeting beginning at noon today to interview 12 finalists.

Each applicant will be allowed 15 minutes in which to give a presentation that will include a question and answer period.

She says each candidate will be considered until a majority vote is reached.

The deadline for an appointment is June 3. If no appointment is made by then, the Council will be required to call a special election to the vacancy.
