Dana Point may expand ban on polystyrene food service ware

The Dana Point City Council tonight may agree to amend its ordinance relating to the ban on polystyrene to include products packaged outside of the city and then sold inside.

Councilwoman Debra Lewis says currently, the ban on polystyrene is only for food packaged inside of the city. And the Council had realized street food vendors could package their food items outside of the city with the banned polystyrene and then bring it into the city. And then the material could wind up in the beaches and impact sea life.

Lewis says the proposed amended ordinance has exceptions such as food coolers and ice chests and for food that is packaged in nationally manufactured materials.

Tonight’s City Council meeting begins at six.
