Vaccines, guns, housing bills await California Legislature

California lawmakers are preparing to return to work with one month left to pass bills before adjourning for the year.

The Legislature was busy before the July recess, passing a $214.8 billion operating budget and setting up funds to pay future wildfire victims and clean up drinking water.

But lawmakers still have lots to do. A measure before the Senate would force companies like Uber and Lyft to treat their drivers like full-time employees. Another bill would cap rent increases for most people at 7% a year.

Lawmakers are also considering giving public health officials oversight of doctors who grant more than five medical exemptions each year for vaccinations.

Legislators return to work today and plan to adjourn Sept. 13.
