San Juan Capistrano may adopt MOU for water transfe

The San Juan Capistrano City Council tonight may approve a Memorandum of Understanding to set major deal points for the transfer of ownership and operation of the City’s water and sewer utility systems to the Santa Margarita Water District.

Council member John Taylor says the transfer is good thing for San Juan Capistrano because the water district is a more stable, larger company to take of care of water and sewer utilities than the city. It handles those 24/7.

He says deal points include a reduction in water and sewer rates for a period of time.

The agreement between the City and the water district must gain approval by the Local Agency Formation Commission known as LAFCO before it can be implemented, which he anticipates by early next year.

Tonight’s City Council meeting begins at five.
