California ammo check law blocked 100 sales in first month

California officials say the state's new ammunition background check law stopped more than 100 banned individuals from buying bullets in its first month.

Attorney General Xavier Becerra disclosed the early results yesterday as a gun owners group tries to block the law that took effect July 1.

The filing came as Gov. Gavin Newsom said the federal government should follow California's lead in requiring background checks for ammunition buyers.

In a legal filing, Becerra said many others were likely stopped from trying to buy ammunition they can’t legally possess because of a past conviction or mental health commitment.

A federal judge is expected to decide later this month whether to halt the law as a violation of the Second Amendment right to bear arms and other federal laws.
